Overall, police reported 182,361 incidents of shoplifting under $5,000 in 2024. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cOwners should not be spending more time and money managing theft, vandalism and safety risks than running their business,\u201d Kayode Southwood, CFIB senior policy analyst, said in a release. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cSome business owners have told us they\u2019ve spent thousands of dollars on installing security cameras or replacing smashed windows. Some have even said they\u2019d rather take the pandemic over the crime they\u2019re dealing with now.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> Safety has also become a major concern for retailers, with more than 90 per cent saying shoplifters are exhibiting more violence compared to 2022, while violent incidents were up 61 per cent, according to a\u00a0Retail Council of Canada <\/p>\n<p>                        report<\/p>\n<p>                         in September 2025. <\/p>\n<p> The trade association said the average shoplifting incident results in a loss of $363 last year, with total losses amounting to $1.04 billion. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cWe have seen retailers closing retail locations across various markets in Canada where it is no longer sustainable to operate,\u201d it said in the report. <\/p>\n<p> The CFIB is calling on all levels of government to adjust the Criminal Code to deal with repeat offenders, improve law enforcement response times and institute security rebates to help small businesses prevent crimes. <\/p>\n<ul class=\"related_links\">\n<li>Businesses warn government supports amid tariff uncertainty &#8216;miss the mark&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Deal on recognition of goods hailed as step toward interprovincial free trade<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> \u201cEverybody deserves to feel safe in the community where they\u2019re trying to earn an honest living,\u201d Southwood said. \u201cToo many owners tell us they lie awake at night watching their security cameras, hoping no one breaks in again.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> <em>\u2022 Email: bcousins@postmedia.com<\/em> <\/p>\n\n<br \/>Shoplifting on the rise as cost of living mounts<\/a><br \/>\n<br \/>2026-04-08 17:08:11<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many of Canada\u2019s small businesses are witnessing an increase in crime as the cost of living climbs.
