China\u2019s 34 per cent retaliatory tariffs are due on Thursday.<\/p>\nOver the weekend Trump and his administration showed few signs of backing down. The president said on Air Force One: \u201cForget markets for a second \u2014 we have all the advantages,\u201d and \u201csometimes you have to take medicine to fix something.\u201d<\/p>\nStill many remain hopeful that the man known for \u201cThe Art of the Deal\u201d will find a way to ease the pressure. Analysts say what will be crucial in the next few days is whether the White House tries to find \u201can elegant off-ramp or doubles down.\u201d<\/p>\n
Saturday the United States\u2019 10 per cent baseline tariffs on all countries went into effect and on Wednesday those are set to rise as the higher reciprocal tariffs take hold. China\u2019s 34 per cent retaliatory tariffs are due on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Over the weekend Trump and his administration showed few signs of backing down. The president said on Air Force One: \u201cForget markets for a second \u2014 we have all the advantages,\u201d and \u201csometimes you have to take medicine to fix something.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still many remain hopeful that the man known for \u201cThe Art of the Deal\u201d will find a way to ease the pressure. More than 50 countries called the administration over the weekend seeking talks.<\/p>\n
Capital Economics expects the president to quickly announce a few deals that will reduce the tariffs on the hardest hit countries, followed by more agreements in the months to come.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe suspect that even the pugnacious Trump must understand he\u2019s gone too far this time,\u201d said Paul Ashworth, Capital\u2019s chief North American economist.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n
