Rate hikes likely at an end after broad-based deceleration in prices, say economists<\/p>\n

That 3.8 per cent figure was also below the estimates of economists, whose consensus view was that price pressures would hold steady at four per cent for the month. So-called trim and median inflation \u2014 the Bank of Canada\u2019s preferred measures, as they strip out some of the most volatile items of the inflation basket \u2014 also decelerated in the month, to 3.7 and 3.8 per cent, respectively. That brought the three-month average of median inflation to 3.5 per cent \u2014 down from 4.4 per cent \u2014 a welcome trend for the central bank.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

The deceleration was broad-based, with prices easing for certain travel-related services, durable goods and groceries, the latter of which has proven to be a flashpoint with Canadian consumers.<\/span><\/p>\nThat slowdown breaks a two-month string of accelerating price pressures, giving further evidence the Bank of Canada\u2019s most aggressive interest rate-hiking cycle in recent memory is having the desired effect of taking some of the heat out of the domestic economy. On Oct. 16, the central bank noted in its Business Outlook Survey and Survey of Consumer Expectations that firms and consumers remain wary of higher costs as inflation remains at elevated levels.<\/p>\n
On the durable goods front \u2014 items that are intended to last for more than three years \u2014 prices notched declines on a number of fronts, with furniture prices falling 4.6 per cent year over year and appliance prices down 2.3 per cent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nOn the flip side, Canadians continue to pay more at the gas pump, with prices rising at a 7.5 per cent pace in September, up from just 0.8 per cent in August. The September re-acceleration was in part due to so-called base effects \u2014 essentially, fluctuations due to anomalous distorting events the year prior. In this case, last September\u2019s sharp deceleration of gas prices due to an increase in global oil supplies skewed this year\u2019s reading.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

On a provincial basis, inflation decelerated in six provinces, with the lone exceptions being Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec.<\/p>\n\nRelated Stories<\/p>\n

That could give Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem some breathing room to hold on rates when the central bank makes its next decision on Oct. 25, says Royce Mendes, managing director and head of macro strategy at <\/span>Desjardins\u00a0Capital Markets.<\/span><\/p>\nIn a note to clients Oct. 17, Mendes said he believes the central bank has hit the end of the road for this rate-hiking cycle after increasing its benchmark rate from the pandemic low of 0.25 per cent all the way to five per cent.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe slowdown in most measures of inflation combined with the lower volatility across categories should easily give the Bank of Canada enough confidence to hold rates next week,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
