European sports retailer Decathlon is closing a quarter of its Canadian stores later this summer due to a “changing” retail landscape.

The company is closing its locations in Brampton, Burlington, Markham, Vaughan and Scarborough this summer, with a final date still to be determined. The company said it intends to keep its other 15 locations, which are primarily in Quebec.

“We will continue to stay agile and adapt our retail offerings to best serve Canadian sport enthusiasts,” Jérôme Morice, chief operating officer at Decathlon Canada, said in an email. “Decathlon is committed to making sport more accessible to everyone no matter where they live, and this means exploring all avenues that meet our customers where they are and continuing to provide quality service.”

After the stores close, Toronto-area customers will still be able to buy online and the company is looking to speed up the delivery process through wholesale distribution and smaller stores.
