Trips from the United States
by Canadian residents were down again in October, dropping 26.3 per cent to 2.3 million return trips compared to the same month last year, according to monthly
travel data from Statistics Canada.
That is roughly the same number of return trips Canadians took from the U.S. in
September
, as residents continued to shun their southern neighbour as the colder weather approaches.
Travel to and from the U.S. accounted for 70.1 per cent of all trips abroad taken by Canadian residents during October.
Return trips from the U.S. by automobile were down 30. 2 per cent to 1.6 million for the month, while those by air declined 15.1 per cent to 685,100 trips compared to the previous year.
Meanwhile, the number of trips to Canada by U.S. residents was up three per cent to 1.8 million. October had the first increase in eight consecutive months of year-over-year decline.
Arrivals by automobile were unchanged, while air arrivals were up 6.3 per cent year over year to 448,000 trips. The number of U.S. residents who disembarked from cruise ships in Canada was 122,800 in October, up 22.2 per cent from 2024.
Trips to Canada by overseas residents increased 11.7 per cent. Of the 549,000 overseas residents arriving in Canada in October, 81 per cent came by aircraft.
The primary contributors to the year-over-year rise in overseas visitors to Canada were Europe, with arrivals up 10.5 per cent, and Asia, up 14.9 per cent.
On a seasonally-adjusted basis, U.S.-resident arrivals to Canada were up 1.5 per cent, while overseas-resident arrivals were up 2.5 per cent.
Overall, Canadian residents’ return trips from overseas increased 9.1 per cent compared to a year earlier. On a seasonally-adjusted basis, these were up 2.3 per cent in October.
Canadians took 997,500 return trips overseas by air, which is up 9.6 per cent compared from last year.
