United States President
Donald Trump
has once again brought up his “
51st state” idea
, this time as millions of Canadians head to the polls on federal election day.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social Monday, Trump wished Canada good luck in the election, but urged Canadians to vote for the candidate with the “strength and wisdom” to make Canada the 51st state of the U.S.
“No more artificially drawn line from many years ago,”
Trump wrote in the post.
“Look how beautiful this land mass would be. Free access with NO BORDER. ALL POSITIVES WITH NO NEGATIVES. IT WAS MEANT TO BE!”
Trump had slowed down the “51st state” comments since Liberal leader
Mark Carney
took over as prime minister from Justin Trudeau, whom he referred to as governor Trudeau, but recently the president has ramped up the rhetoric again.
In an interview with Time Magazine last week,
Trump said he is “not really trolling” when he talks about the annexation of Canada, while repeating a claim that the U.S. is subsidizing the country to the tune of billions of dollars annually.
“Canada is an interesting case.… I say the only way this thing really works is for Canada to become a state,” he said in the interview.
Last week, Carney also revealed that Trump brought up the 51st state idea during a call between the two on March 28.
“Him raising something, and then where the discussion is – he has these things in his mind,” Carney told reporters after several questions about the matter on April 24. “This is not news. He raises it all the time, OK?”
